Zohran Mamdani affirms plans to make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point during his election bid.
An Iconic Home
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for most New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key platform, did not confirm he would live there right away after his triumph in November.
"My choice was based on our family's safety and the need to directing my complete efforts on implementing the platform on affordability New Yorkers elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
He resided in Astoria, Queens, a district renowned for its diverse cultural enclaves and global cuisine.
"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"While I may no longer live there, it will always live a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he added.
A Contentious Issue
Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his central policy – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.
However his rivals, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the apartment despite the fact that he came from a well-known family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a place for civic gatherings, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.
A Stately Residence
As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment far removed from his modest Astoria home.
With its butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.
Within, the first floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed consistent with the home's original era.
The property, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to protect the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care what people claim," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, a policy where the city regulates on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.
City residents view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the cost of housing rises faster than the average income.
Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
