The Reason Real Madrid Have 'Complete Confidence' in Teenager Pitarch
Whenever a teenage makes club history in a key Champions League tie against City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.
In only his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil round of 16 first leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also made his club debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English Premier League side in the midweek return to confirm a last eight place.
At 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch became the team's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, beating star Vini Jr's previous mark by 10 days.
Rapid Ascent From La Fabrica
The midfielder is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.
He signed for Real from CD Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a positive impact.
Pitarch progressed to the reserve side and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, personality and drive he added to the team.
'His Best Attribute Remains His Personality'
In the summer of 2025, former boss Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the senior squad and gave him playing time during the warm-up matches.
However, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his career as he came on as a late substitute in both ties against Benfica that set up the meeting with Manchester City.
"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the first day I started playing football, every day you go to train and each day you play a match," stated the player after his debut.
"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the best competition."
Given a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he spent several seasons after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opportunity.
The teenager has seized it with displays that have defied his youth and experience.
"He is a extremely fast footballer, and you can observe what he's capable of," remarked the coach. "He is incredibly energetic, with excellent endurance, work-rate and mobility."
The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.
"His greatest quality is his character," added he. "He constantly demands the possession, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.
"I understand people are surprised to see him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to do his normal game.
"Thiago will continue to get opportunities with the first team. It is delightful to have a player like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and was raised fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through youth setups before joining the club's famous La Fabrica system.
He possesses dual Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, giving him the option to play for both nations at the highest level.
Under Fifa eligibility rules, players may appear for different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a competitive senior international match.
He has featured for the Spanish national team at underage levels, representing both the U19 and under-20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja reached the quarter-finals.
Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to either full national side, who are watching his progress with interest.
Speaking recently, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision so far. Things are positive with Spain, but I will reach a decision soon."
This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal opted for La Roja, Brahim decided to play for Morocco.
Eyes on the Prize
For now, his attention is on making his mark in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.
He played over an hour in the 2-1 win at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.
His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in younger players to aid the team pursue future success.
After his notable contributions so far on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.
"The manager treats me the identical way. We handle it very normally. I attempt not to overanalyze it excessively - I must earn my playing time on the field," he said following the success at Manchester.
