The Brothers from the Dagestani Region Excelling in MMA and at Manchester United.

Ibragim Ibragimov smiles as he considers how his family's life has transformed since moving to England from Dagestan eight years ago.

"I love it here," the PFL star states.

"We frequently remark, 'this is the nation I ought to have been born in.'"

The 21-year-old departed his home in the North Caucasus of Russia as his father was convinced a relocation spanning more than 3,000 miles would provide superior professional opportunities for him and his brothers.

The original plan was for Ibragim and his three brothers – Amir (17), Gazik (16), and Muhammad (15) – to finish their education before joining one of the nation's universities.

But, life has turned out somewhat different for the Ibragimov household.

Ibragim is now a pro mixed martial arts fighter and is viewed as one of the leading prospects in the PFL, a prominent MMA organization.

His brothers have taken a different path in athletics and have each been contracted by Manchester United – with Amir vying for a place in the senior squad.

"The main goal for us is to extract everything from our chosen fields," says Ibragim.

"I hope them to represent all of the finest teams in the world. Today it is Man United, in the future it could be a another team."

From Wrestlers to Football Prodigies

Located in the south of Russia, Dagestan holds a mystical status among combat sports fans for generating a number of UFC titleholders in recent years.

The area has a long history in wrestling, excelling in the sambo style and producing numerous Olympic and world winners.

This achievement is no accident, though, as children from the region are frequently pushed to begin fighting, specifically wrestling, almost as soon as they can stand.

"When I was a kid, my dad was constantly telling me and my little brothers that we had to be strong, firstly to protect ourselves, your relatives, and your companions," says Ibragim.

"Therefore we all got used to fighting, and which is why everyone knows how to fight in Dagestan. It's not a surprise."

"Amir was a very good wrestler. You can observe the transition from wrestling to football; clearly, it helped my little brothers a great deal."

"Some of the footballers he faces don't have the identical foundation he possesses. That's why he's solid, strong and incredibly driven – because of wrestling."

Amir was only nine years old when he was put through his paces at Sheffield United. Not knowing of his real age, coaches placed him with boys five years older.

He was not intimidated by the oversight and was more than capable competing against older players because of his background in wrestling.

"They thought Amir and I were the same age, so the story goes," says Ibragim.

Amir was recruited, along with Ibragim's little brothers Gazik and Muhammad.

The clan's time in South Yorkshire was brief, however, as just weeks after joining the Blades, Manchester United became aware of Amir's ability and he moved over the Pennines as a result.

"They played Manchester United in a competition and Amir netted a spectacular free-kick," says Ibragim.

"One of their talent spotters saw him play and selected him immediately."

Six years after signing for the Manchester United club and at the age of 15, Amir was one of the most youthful players in the club's history to practice with the senior side when he achieved this in April 2023.

"Do you know what he said to me? 'Here is where I should be'," Ibragim says.

"Is he able to be a first-team player for Manchester United? 100%. They should allow all the young players get game time now."

"In my opinion they would play less effectively than the existing first-team players. I think the young guys are more motivated than the current first-team players."

Since then, Gazik and Muhammad, the latter once on the books of Manchester City, have also made the move to Manchester United.

"Gazik, this kid is gifted," continues Ibragim.

"He learned everything faster than everyone else. He's a solid defender. He's going to be like a new Rio Ferdinand for Man United."

'A Goal' to Compete at Old Trafford

Ibragim has also moved to Manchester and dedicates most of his days perfecting his MMA skills at Manchester Top Team.

In August, he passed three weeks in his homeland at Khabib Nurmagomedov's gym, helping Islam Makhachev get ready for a November UFC championship bout.

"I would never have thought I would be training under Khabib," Ibragim says.

"He was the best fighter in the world – and we constantly used to look up to him when we were growing up."

"Today, I'm here in his gym and training with Islam Makhachev."

Fresh from working with two UFC champions from Dagestan, it is no surprise Ibragim says he is eager to claim a world title of his own one day.

But that does not prevent him from sometimes dreaming of playing for United and walking out on the hallowed turf at Old Trafford, similar to his brothers.

"I had a PlayStation at home and I constantly used to play as Man United, scoring with legendary players," he says.

"Now, for my brothers to be Man United players, it's like a fantasy realized."

"An event at Old Trafford? It's a goal for me. I was discussing with the PFL guys about it to see if they could do it. It would be huge."
