New York Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he is reported as critical but stable.
“Still unsure,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”
New York police released video stills earlier this week of a man sought in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.
The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday about halfway between Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was transported to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a newborn.
“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd was inactive this season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.
Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was expected to be a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on early August and had to be helped off.
Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while working his way back.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
