Forecasters are saying an icy beginning to the new year, with wintry precipitation expected throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers have been told to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Celebrations Continue Amid Warnings

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay festivities are expected to proceed, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This comes despite yellow warnings for snow over northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those partying, so warmer clothes will be essential," said the national forecaster.

Celebrations Under Open but Cold Skies

Across the UK, the weather is set to be ideal for fireworks displays, with a lack of precipitation and good visibility. The mercury are due to be cold, making additional clothing vital, as per forecasters.

To the north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to affect visibility for seeing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Widespread Weather Alerts for Friday

Heading into Friday, advisories are active across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

• Disruptions and cancellations are likely on the transport network.

The Mercury Set to Plummet Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to plummet as wintry showers and strong winds are likely to batter the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Health Warnings Activated

At the same time, amber cold health alerts have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency said this indicated the weather could to cause notable consequences across medical and care provision. This includes a likely increase in the mortality rate among vulnerable individuals or those in the older age groups.

The advice for all is clear: to welcome the new year in good health, dressing for the cold is absolutely essential.
