Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users using these drugs need to be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Doctors believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a intense resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a switch activating and you become ravenous," described one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers stress that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
