Eurovision Used to Be a Whimsical Delight – However It Has Evolved Into a Calculated Tool to Whitewash War.

An recent term surfaced a couple of months following the onset of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it stands for “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This designation is found only in Gaza, per insights from doctors such as child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is rare for doctors to care for a child who has lost their entire family. However, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary concerning the devastating conflict in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been wiped out and the number of child amputees surpasses that of any other region in the world. Nothing ordinary about many doctors arriving back from a landscape of rubble with testimonies of children being intentionally shot at.

An Unimaginable Crisis Despite a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Critical healthcare resources are being blocked those in need, and international watchdogs contend that atrocities are still being committed. The Israeli government has denied these allegations, consistent with how it disavows everything it is charged with. But while grieving children who lost parents are now enduring frigid conditions in makeshift tent camps, there is a piece of uplifting information: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from advancing its professed goal of “unity and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to roll out a welcoming platform for Israel, even though several European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, we are told, is what international harmony manifests as.

The contest, notably excluded Russia from taking part in 2022 over the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza is entirely distinct.

A Double Standard

Forget the fact that Israel was accused of questionable voting tactics last year in what appears to have been an attempt to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Pay no mind to the evidence that attacks by settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have escalated. Disregard the condition that international journalists are still blocked from freely reporting in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds While Ignoring Staggering Tragedy

The contest marks seven decades next year – nearly twice the current lifespan of someone in Gaza now. The show may go on, but it will never be able to restore the camp joy it once represented. A contest that once promoted peace has transformed into a blatant mechanism to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
