American flight controllers are more and more looking for additional employment and reporting ill, as they remain on duty without pay amid the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has announced.

"The controllers are wearing thin," the official informed a news outlet on Sunday, as some flights were grounded on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.

After the government shut down on 1 October, air traffic controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were told to keep doing their jobs without pay.

But a number have been missing, causing airports to stop or slow their flight operations, which has added to delays due to weather and other issues.

Over three thousand American flights were postponed on the weekend, and Duffy stated he anticipates the circumstances to grow worse.

"I observe the stress," he remarked in an interview on a weekend program, noting that he had met with multiple professionals to hear their worries directly.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there looking, 'Can I work for Uber, am I able to find an alternative of income to make ends meet?'" he added.

Duffy further mentioned that on Saturday 22 alerts at airports indicated flights would be delayed due to a shortage of workers - among the peak since the shutdown began.

The American federal closure entered its 26th day on Sunday, rendering it the second most extended halt in the past.

Duffy has consistently cautioned that aviation regulators would reduce the number of planes in the air if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his interview, he would not answer directly when questioned if it was secure to fly in the United States, and instead made a direct appeal to the professionals.

"I need my staff concentrating on the airspace, not on the finances at home," the official said.

On Sunday, certain flights were grounded at LAX due to staffing shortages, leading to interruption at the fifth-busiest airport in the nation and one of the busiest in the world, as well as additional travel stretching north to the city of Oakland.

The FAA alert went out at 8:45 AM in the morning on Sunday. Numerous trips were back on schedule by midday.

Travel at Newark Airport, however, were delayed an average of over an hour due to staffing shortages, and the authority said Dallas Fort-Worth, the second most active airfield in the US, could experience problems from low staffing later in the day.

The agency advised passengers in California to consult carriers about updated flight schedules.

The issue comes ahead of the third match of the World Series, which is due to be played in Los Angeles on Monday night, and about one month prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, among the peak times to fly in the United States.

Pressure on American aviation helped end a federal closure in two thousand nineteen. Back then, the halt had reached its fifth week and affected airline operations, including aviator instruction.

It led a number of air traffic controllers to remain absent on the identical date on January 25, 2019, temporarily stopping travel at New York's LaGuardia airport.

That same day, the former president, who at the time was in his first term as president, consented to approve a temporary funding measure, bringing an end to the federal closure after 35 days.
